Summary

A recently released ex-convict named Shadow Moon meets a mysterious man who calls himself "Wednesday" and who knows more than he first seems to about Shadow's life and past. American Gods is the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name. The series was developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, who serve as showrunners as well. The first season of the show is composed of eight episodes and aired from April to June 2017. Season 2 for the series was announced in May of the same year. The upcoming season is expected to air in 2018 and will be composed of 10 episodes. The series tells the story of Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a newly released convict whose wife Laura (Emily Browning) died in a car accident shortly before his release. He meets a mysterious man named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) who takes him under his employ. He soon discovers that gods old and new are alive and well all around him, and he becomes a central part of their machinations. The book was published in 2001 and went on to win Bram Stoker Award for Novel in 2001, Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel in 2002, Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2002 and Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2003. The same year the book was published Gaiman already announced that HBO has expressed interest in adapting the novel for TV. In 2013 he revealed that the series is still in the works but will be shown in another network. In 2014 it was announced that Fuller and Green are developing the series for Starz. Fuller discloses that the first two seasons will follow the novel but will expand the events in the book.  The series has also been given permission to refer to the book’s companion, Anansi Boys, in the development of the story. The first season was well received by the audience and critics. It has been nominated for Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Visual Effects in the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards. Guest performer Orlando Jones was also nominated as Outstanding Guest Performer: Drama Series in the 2017 Black Reel Awards.
