Summary

  • Beyoncé's concert documentary Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is struggling at the box office, with a projected 77% drop in its second week.
  • It is currently in competition with Disney's Wish for the No. 5 spot on the domestic box office chart.
  • There's a possibility that Renaissance may fall out of the Top 5 after just one week in theaters.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is in danger of falling off the chart completely. The movie, which is a concert documentary following Beyoncé's recent Renaissance World Tour and was written, directed, and produced by the star herself, opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office the weekend after Thanksgiving. Its opening weekend gross of $21.8 million allowed it to conquer other well-performing movies including the holdover young adult blockbuster The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and the new release of the Japanese import Godzilla Minus One.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé release is hanging on by a thread in its second weekend at the domestic box office. The movie is currently projected to post a staggering week 2 drop around 77% with an estimated gross of $5 million. It is currently neck-and-neck with Disney's Wish, and the end of Sunday will determine which one claims the No. 5 spot on the domestic box office chart, which means there's a chance Renaissance will fall out of the Top 5 completely after just one week in theaters.

Beyoncé's Box Office Plummet Is Shocking (But Not All Bad)

One reason this week 2 drop is so unexpected is that the Taylor Swift vs. Beyoncé box office battle was not necessarily expected to end in such a decisive victory. The Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour documentary, which was released in mid-October, opened to $92.8 million and quickly became the highest-grossing concert movie of all time, easily besting Renaissance. Both movies document the summer's biggest music tours, boast extended runtimes, and are being distributed by AMC, which led to this direct comparison.

Renaissance: A film by Beyoncé is bringing the record-breaking tour to the big screen, but how close is it to the Renaissance concert experience?

Renaissance no longer benefits from being compared to The Eras Tour. However, on the scale of a regular concert movie release, it is performing outstandingly well. Concert movies tend to be front-loaded and post large second-weekend drops, and the movie is performing according to what might be expected in the typically sleepy second weekend of December.

The No. 1 movie of the weekend, The Boy and the Heron, only earned an estimated $12.8 million.

While the movie can't compare to 2023's earlier record-smashing concert movie hit, it is still perfectly capable of breaking records on its own. The cumulative box office total for Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is an estimated $33.5 million before factoring in this weekend's international grosses, which have yet to be fully calculated. That total already makes it the eighth highest-grossing concert movie of all time, above Katy Perry: Part of Me's gross of $32.7 million in 2012.
